Women’s Equality Day Celebrated with Voter Registration

The League of Women Voters of Tompkins County and the City Federation of Women’s Organizations are celebrating Women’s Equality Day on August 26 by registering new voters at the Ithaca Farmers Market. Women’s Equality Day commemorates the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution passed giving women the right to vote. Women won the vote after a massive, 72-year peaceful civil rights movement that had its formal beginnings in 1848 at the world’s first women’s rights convention, in Seneca Falls, New York.New York Representative Bella Abzug led Congress to adopt August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1971. She noted in her resolution that the day would be a “symbol of the continued fight for equal rights” and would also recognize “that day in 1970 on which a nationwide demonstration for women’s rights took place.” The League of Women Voters was created after the 19th amendment passed to encourage all citizens to become informed voters. To vote in the November 7 election, all U.S. citizens 18 or over who are new to Ithaca must register by October 13.For more information on Women’s Equality Day call 272-1247 or visit http://www.nwhp.org/.
