Auburn City Budget Calls For 27-Layoffs

Auburn’s $42.7 MILLION dollar budget for 2006-2007 includes a 9% tax rate increase and calls for laying off 27 employees. City Mananger John Salamone released the proposed budget to the city council last night. Salamone says without the layoffs- the tax rate increase would be 16%. Taking the biggest hit would be the public works department, they would loose 12 employees. Six police officers would also be cut, and the school resource officer program would be eliminated.Other positions to be cut include: a secretary in the city manager’s office, two part-time bingo inspectors, two vacant assistant fire chiefs, an administrative assistant in the planning department, a mechanic, a van driver and three laborers in the street and parks department, one water department maintence worker and three part-time workers, a van driver and part-time clerk in the RSVP program, a vacant recreation director position, and several seasonal positions.
