The natural ingredient of yogurt-lactic acid-will soon help clean up a Seneca County hazardous waste site. The New York State Department of Enviromental Conservation issued a project update this week on the clean up of the 26 acre Tantalo Landfill in Seneca Falls. The old landfill is now part of the 1,556 acre Seneca Meadows Landfill operation. Clean-up work has been underway at the site for the past eight years. The clean up includes consolidation of waste within the landfill, installation of a leachate collection system, and installation of a multi-layer soil and synthetic membrane cap with gas venting. While most of the work has been completed, this month ground water injection wells will be installed and treatment of the groundwater is expected to begin in June. Latic Acid will be injected to the groundwater to enhance the naturally-occuring break-down of contaiminants. Details of the work are available at the Waterloo Library and Historical Society and the Mynderse Library.
