Korir Returning to Defend Boilermaker

Three-time winner John Korir of Kenya will return to defend his title Sunday in the Boilermaker in Utica. Korir won the Boilermaker in 1999, 2001 and 2003 and placed in the top five the other three times he’s competed in what has become the nation’s largest 15-kilometer road race. He’s coming off a second-place finish in the 10-k Peachtree Road Race, held Sunday in Atlanta. The field for the Boilermaker is capped at 10-thousand runners. It also includes four-time defending men’s masters champion Andrew Masai, defending women’s masters champion Elena Paramonova, and four-time Boilermaker wheelchair champ Saul Mendoza. Japan’s Masako Chiba, once the world record-holder in the half marathon and third in the world marathon championships a year ago, stands out among the women entered.
