Auburn Soap Box Derby Ready to Roll

The Nucor Bar Mill Central New York All-American Soap Box Derby has scheduled its big race day for Saturday, May 29 at Hoopes Park and the East Genesee Street eastbound lane in Auburn with special events scheduled throughout the day, including auto shows, childdren’s games and live music.Nearly 40 racers will try their luck in the Stock and Super Stock Divisions this year in hopes of traveling to the World Championship races in Akron, Ohio in late June. Participating children (male and female) varying in age from 8 through 17 from such locales as Syracuse, Oneida, Waterloo, Skaneateles, Cato, Memphis, Moravia, Weedsport and Auburn will compete to be Central New York Champions.The location of the race site is familiar ground and is where the original races were held in the early 70’s. The races returned in 2001 after a 25-year hiatus due in part to sponsor agency the YMCA and the host City of Auburn.This years event will feature an antique and classic auto show with the Prison City ramblers and the Finger Lakes Antique Car Club, food concessions by the Downtown Deli Express and Auburn Football Boosters, children’s games sponsored by Gavras Center and live music.The Seneca Falls Savings Bank will sponsore the live entertainment Sound Stage this year providing event-goers with the rhythm ‘n’ blues sounds of Phil Petroff & Natural Fact and local singer/acoustic rocker Ron Cunningham from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Natural fact features the talents of Petroff who was the former guitarist for Debbie Davies Band and The Nighthawks as well as founding The Lone Sharks. Bassist Steve Wargo honed his skills while working at the original Capricorn Records in Atlanta while drummer David Olson arrives in town with credentials that includes two Grammy Awards from his touring days with the Robert Cray Band.Races begin around 9 a.m., following Soap Box Derby Opening Ceremonies and Parade with the National Anthem sung by 12-year old Heather Lardeo. Races will run throughout the day.The All-American Soap Box Derby, sponsored by the host City of Auburn and host agency the YMCA, Nucor Bar Mill and Seneca Falls Savings Bank, returns for the fourth consecutive year and the second year fo the very successful addition of a Super Kids division for children with disabilities, participating in a dual control car that seats an adult.Sport is the name of the game, and this year the Auburn Football Boosters and Auburn High School Football Team will provide support. The boosters will handle the food concessions while the athletes will load and unload soap box cars at the starting and finish lines of this yearÕs event.The 1970 Auburn City Soap Box Derby Champion Eric Naumann, now a chiropractor in Auburn, has gone from racing in the World Championships in that year to one of the many sponsors the past three years of the race.
