HWS 11th Annual Day of Service

Hobart and William Smith Colleges 11th Annual Day of Service will be under way on Saturday, Oct. 4 (Sept. 26, 2003) GENEVA, N.Y.—Two years ago, Geneva residents Kim and Vincent Aliperti wanted to clean the trash out of Castle Creek and its banks, which were filling up with everything from old chairs and bed frames to pop cans and large barrels. They spotted a sign put up by Hobart and William Smith Colleges looking for community involvement in the annual Day of Service. Kim Aliperti gave the number a call and much to her satisfaction the project was added to the list and the Alipertis were there to help. This year Kim and Vincent and their three preschoolers will once again be wading down the creek with about two dozen Hobart and William Smith students pulling trash from the water as they clean the section of the creek that runs from behind the park on Brooke Street to Castle Street near the Big M. While the amount of trash being pulled from the creek won’t be as great as it was that first year, it’s an annual project that is now maintained through the Colleges’ service day. The Castle Creek clean up is just one of more than 30 projects that will be completed on Saturday, Oct. 4, in the greater Geneva area—encompassing spots from Romulus to Canandaigua. Volunteers are still needed and are asked to check in at 8:30 a.m. in the HWS library atrium and gather for opening ceremonies at 9:15 a.m. on Stern Hall lawn. Transportation will be provided to the clean up sites. Crews will return to the campus for a celebration on Stern Hall lawn at 1:30 p.m. Volunteers may register the day of the event or online before then at www.hws.edu/dayofservice.In addition, a special service festival for kids will begin at 10 a.m. at the Barn on campus. Children, 8 years old and under, and their parents/guardians are invited to participate in age-appropriate service, games, and entertainment. Register in advance or at the door. For more information contact the Office of Public Service at 781-3825.###
